Why choose us?

Teesside High School is a small school that focuses on the needs of the individual child, through a warm and nurturing ethos. We set our sights high in our academic aspirations, but equally, we believe that the education of a child outside of the classroom is just as important as it seeks to build character, resilience and life-long skills. We do this through sport, music, drama, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, competitions and visiting speakers, to name but a few strands of what we believe education is truly about.

We do not select by academic ability, focussing more on what your child can do, and I passionately believe that this leads to a much more diverse and inclusive School community where each child can experience a real sense of belonging. Combined with our small class sizes, this is borne out by our exam results in which our ‘value added’ is consistently excellent.

I also firmly believe that a happy child is a productive child, and that our excellent pastoral care keeps this principle firmly at the root of our dealings with pupils and parents.

Our Prep School children enjoy the benefits of extensive input from the Senior School in terms of facilities and teaching staff and this makes for a much smoother transition to their time in the Senior School. We are set in extensive grounds on the banks of the River Tees with our sports facilities all on-site, including extensive outdoor playing areas, a large sports hall and modern fitness suite.

It is very hard to do our campus, our teachers and our ethos justice. I warmly invite you to come and visit us, to experience what one parent succinctly phrased as, ‘education as it should be’.

Admissions procedure

The first stage of the admissions process is to come and visit us! We find most parents believe our website and prospectus cannot do our unique atmosphere and personalise learning environment justice. We can offer you a personal consultation with our Headteacher (or Director of the Prep School) as well as a guided tour of the School. This will give you the opportunity to discuss your individual circumstances and ask any questions you may have about Teesside High School or independent education in general.

Next, we invite your son or daughter to spend time with us through a Taster Day. This will enable them to get a feel for life at Teesside High School; meeting their teachers, sharing their interests with a Tutor, enjoying extra-curricular clubs and activities and socialising with friends in our expansive grounds.

Once a Taster Day has been completed, we submit an offer to parents/families. We appreciate the decision to choose a School is not taken lightly, so offers are held open for one calendar month. Acceptance forms and terms and conditions are issued at this stage,

When acceptance forms are received by School, signed and completed, we make arrangements as to the best start date for your child and ensure the smoothest possible transition to THS. Over 80% of students who attend a Taster Day subsequently enrol at our School, and we believe our small, caring and personalised nature helps each child settle in easily in their new setting.
