The Governors of Teesside High School have recently reviewed the Scholarships and Bursaries Policy and added some new Scholarships to our current offering.
Prep School Exhibition Scholarships
One of the changes is the introduction on Exhibitions with a value of £500 per annum in the Prep School. There will be:
- Sport and Mathematics Exhibition Scholarships in Year 3
- Science and Music Exhibition Scholarships in Year 5
Up to two awards will be made in each category each year. Exhibitions may be converted into Scholarships in Year 7 if progress is considered to be excellent.
It is a great honour to be awarded a Scholarship or Exhibition and we are thereby acknowledging that the award holders have a particular gift or talent academically or in another area. We will undertake to mentor these children carefully but will also expect them to play a full role in the life of the school and to be prepared to represent the school at events.
High School Scholarships
A range of Scholarships are available at 11+ and 16+. We have also introduced a new range of other Scholarships – please see below for details.
Scholarships are awarded based on the pupil’s performance in the scholarship assessments. Students whose performance is close to that of a Scholar may be awarded an Exhibition, i.e. a one-off fixed Financial Award.
The award of a Scholarship is not only highly prestigious for the student, but entitles the holder to a modest discount each term for the duration of the Award. In addition, scholars are entitled to apply for further financial assistance. In line with current Charities Legislation, all such discounts are means tested. The means test is the standard applied across Independent Schools’ Council schools and is administered in accordance with the Independent Schools Bursars’ Association guidelines.
The Academic Scholarship Assessment Day for September 2013 entry into Year 7 is being held on 1 February 2013. Pupils who score highly in the assessment which takes place during the Year 7 Taster Day (on 11 January 2013) will automatically be invited to attend this Scholarship day. If your child misses the Year 7 Taster Day but you still wish to apply, please contact the admissions registrar as soon as possible on 01642 782095.
Music and Sports Scholarships
Scholarships for Music (Year 7 and Year 12 entry) and Sports (Year 12 entry) are also available. The next assessment day for these Scholarships is Friday 8 March 2013.
NEW: Cleveland Scholarship for Girls/Queen Victoria Scholarship for Boys
There have been TWO new ‘all-rounder’ scholarships introduced for a boy and a girl in Year 7 called the Cleveland Scholarship for Girls and the Queen Victoria Scholarship for Boys. These will be awarded to one boy and one girl in Year 7 who excel, both academically and in one other area e.g. music or sport. These scholarships will attract an award of £1000 per annum. Assessments are to be held on Friday 8 March.
NEW: The Hurworth Scholarship
There will be up to THREE Hurworth Scholarships in memory of Hurworth House School, which will be awarded in Year 9 for excellence in English or Mathematics. Assessments are held in the summer term.
Details relating to eligibility criteria for these Scholarships can be obtained from the admissions registrar by telephoning 01642 782095 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sixth Form Scholarships
Ogden Trust Science Scholarships
Teesside High School sponsor Sixth Form Physics students as part of the Ogden Trust Science Scholarship Scheme. The scheme operates for students who possess outstanding ability in Physics. This award is extremely competitive and we are delighted that we currently have a student in receipt of the Scholarship.
Music and Sports Scholarships
Scholarships for Music and Sports are available for Year 12 entry. The assessment day for these Scholarships is Friday 8 March 2013.
To be considered for a scholarship a pupil must first apply using the School’s application form. If you wish your child to be considered for any of these awards, please contact the admissions registrar on 01642 782095 or email email@example.com
Bursaries may only be awarded in the Senior School to those families with the most limited of means who are most likely to benefit from the education offered at the School.
They may also be awarded in the Sixth Form to local pupils whose parents have limited financial means, and sometimes these are available to help families who already have a place at the School, but whose circumstances have changed significantly during their time here.
The Hurworth House Bursary
In honour of Hurworth House School, we have a new fund for specific postcodes in Darlington and the surrounding areas. If you live in the postcode areas DL1, DL2, DL3, DL6 or DL7 you may be eligible for a Hurworth House Bursary of up to £2,000 per academic year for your children*.
