Teesside High School response to Labour members’ call to abolish private schools

Comment from Teesside High School Head, Mrs Kirsty Mackenzie:

“I read with dismay this weekend that Labour party members had voted to support the abolition of private schools at their annual conference.

“Integrating private schools into the state sector would flood over 600,000 pupils nationally into an already overcrowded and under-funded system, swelling class sizes further and piling enormous pressure on school budgets. It would not create a ‘fairer’ education system.

“I wholeheartedly support increased funding being made available to state schools. However, I also place great importance on parents being able to make an active choice as to the best educational environment for their child. At the moment, many parents in our local area are simply not given enough outstanding state schools to choose from.

“The priority for any government should be improving educational standards for all, not abolishing one sector to fund another.”
