Teesside High School was one of eleven schools from across the region invited to take part in the ‘North East Choir of the Year’ competition, held at Durham Cathedral on Monday 30 January.
After just three weeks of rehearsals, the Prep Choir gave an outstanding performance of a beautiful song by Brian Bedford entitled ‘What’s the Use of Wings?’ and were thrilled to receive third place.
The prestigious competition was judged by Robbie Jacobs, the associate conductor of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, James Lancelot, Master of Choristers and Organist at Durham Cathedral and Will Todd, composer.
The three judges praised the ‘excellent opening solo and duet’ by Lydia and Rosa. They went on to commend the Choir’s diction, saying that they could ‘understand every word of the song’. The performance was described as ‘passionate and moving’ and that it made them feel that ‘all the students had thought about the meaning of the text’.
Pupils and staff alike thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience – a brilliant way to begin Music Festival Week! We are all extremely proud.
