Head’s blog – summer term

Friday 01 July 2022 | By Megan Connor

I cannot believe we are approaching the final week of the academic year and what a year it has been! From our Family Firework Display to school productions, our Christmas Market to our Platinum Jubilee Summer Fair, we have had many celebrations where the THS community spirit has been able to come to life.

The 2021-22 academic year has given us so many amazing memories and achievements which makes the year a one to remember. At the start of the year, we received recognition for the value added to pupils’ expected examination results, with our Sixth Form singled out for particular praise. Science, A-level Mathematics and Sixth Form Departments were all applauded for achieving value added scores which rank within the top 1% of educational providers in the UK!

In December, we continued to build upon our many years of success and were once again recognised as the 6th best performing independent school in the entire North East region, the highest placed of any nonacademically selective school! We are proud not to select children on the basis of their academic potential; we are an inclusive school and we work with children of all abilities to achieve great things, both in and out of the classroom.

Finally, most recently, we were delighted to have been awarded the highest possible grade in all areas during an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). I am so pleased that this rating reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff and pupils each and every day. The exceptional educational provision provided by our staff is evident across all areas.

The last few weeks of the summer term is when we create the most memories in the academic year. It has been so busy with musical productions, our Creative Arts Evening, Sports Days and many more. I loved seeing our Year 11 and 13 students at their Prom and Leavers Ball last week. They all looked wonderful and both evenings were very special. I am extremely looking forward to our Senior School Celebration of Achievement next Friday which makes for an excellent end to the year. I hope to see you all there!

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for such an amazing year and I wish you a restful and relaxing summer holiday – it is very well deserved!
