Why choose Teesside High School?

Thursday 06 August 2020 | By Samantha Hockney

Teesside High School is a small independent school that focuses on the needs of the individual, through a warm and nurturing ethos.

We set our sights high in our academic aspirations, but equally, we believe that the education of a child outside of the classroom is just as important as it seeks to build character, resilience and life-long skills. We do this through sport, music, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, to name just a few strands of what we believe independent education is truly about.

We do not select by academic ability, focusing more on what your child can do. We passionately believe that this leads to a much more diverse and inclusive independent school community where each child can experience a real sense of belonging. In small classes, we deliver an outstanding teaching and learning experience. Our examination results rival some of the most selective independent schools in the region.

We firmly believe that a happy child is a productive child; our excellent pastoral care keeps this principle firmly at the root of our dealings with pupils and parents.

Our Prep School children enjoy the benefits of extensive input from the Senior School in terms of facilities and teaching staff and this makes for a much smoother transition to Year 7 and beyond.

We are set in extensive grounds on the banks of the River Tees with our sports facilities all on-site, including extensive outdoor playing areas, hockey pitch, tennis courts, cricket wicket, a large sports hall and modern fitness suite.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we provided an outstanding distance learning programme to all pupils, with over 2000 lessons delivered virtually via Google Meet. Our teachers’ use of supplementary learning platforms was a beacon of best practice and has allowed Teesside High School pupils to make excellent progress whilst learning from home. We look forward to reopening fully to all year groups in September, thanks to our small class sizes and large, open classroom spaces making this possible.

It is very hard to do our campus, our teachers and our ethos justice. We warmly invite you to come and visit us, to experience what one parent succinctly phrased as, ‘education as it should be’. Social distancing measures are in place.
