Outdoor Education

When the going gets tough, the tough start growing.

At Teesside High School, we believe the opportunity to engage in adventurous activity in the outdoors is fundamental to developing our young people in every way imaginable.

Improving quality of life through better health, fitness and movement is the most basic of expectations from this type of activity, but it is proven to run so much deeper. Building confidence and trust in peers through activities which promote physical and mental challenge in a range of environments, these activities demand perseverance and determination, problem solving and decision making as well as independence and self reliance, all of which builds resilience through a range of day-long and residential experiences.

Along with personal growth, our outdoor and adventurous programme encourages a social awareness and responsibility for our environment. We believe in growing global citizens who are aware of the need for sustainability in the use of our natural resources. Spending time in stunning landscapes both in this country and further afield enriches this awareness, broadening horizons and influencing our young people way beyond the years they spend with us.

Our pupils have the opportunity to take part in:

  • Fortnightly Woodland School sessions
  • Robinwood Adventure Weekend (Year 4)
  • MAC Camp Outdoor and Adventure Activity Holiday Camp
  • Dukeshouse Wood Residential (Year 7)
  • Pastoral Team Building Days (Senior School)
  • Outward Bounds Residential (Year 8-10)
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award, Bronze-Gold (Year 10-Sixth Form)

“Outdoor Education was one of my most favourite parts of my education at Teesside High School. I successfully completed all Duke of Edinburgh Awards, including Gold, and was able to learn and experience so much. Inspired by such opportunities, I went on to study Physical Education and Youth Sport at university, with a dissertation focus on the impact of Outdoor Education on young people.”
