Lest We Forget – Remembrance at THS

Friday 19 November 2021 | By Megan Connor

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Teesside High School fell silent in our Annual Remembrance Service.  This is a school event which holds huge importance to us as a community and especially for our staff, parents and extended family who have represented us in the Armed Forces both during peace times and in conflict to maintain our right to the freedoms we hold dear.

The service included beautiful readings from Iliana Pizzi, Pierre Selenne, Alexander Stonehouse and Jennifer Dodd alongside two fantastic moving choir performances. Mrs Mackenzie’s address led us all to think of the age at which young people would go off to war, never returning, in comparison to the age of our pupils, emphasised in the heart wrenching A Poem For Poppy Day by Don Crawford.

Following The Ode, read by Head Boy Yash Vagadia and prayers by Head Girl Abbie Smith, we were honoured to see poppy wreaths laid by Mrs Mackenzie, RAF Cadet Phoebe, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mr Mark Wright, site manager Peter Herbert, IT technician Scott Morrison, catering manager Marcus Baker and chef Michelle Davies on behalf and in memory of our school community and Armed Forces colleagues.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
