Paul Wakefield

Head of Chemistry

Life before Teesside High School

After graduating with my chemistry degree (University of Lancaster), I worked as a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. Initially, I worked in the chemistry laboratories making small samples of new drugs of pharmaceutical interest. After a few years I was promoted to the development team tasked with purifying an exciting new drug for use in clinical trials – the drug is still in use today! I then did full time teacher training (PGCE) with the University of Sunderland and have been a chemistry teacher since qualifying back in June 2000.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Chemistry has been my obsession since age 10 when I got my first chemistry set and so talking chemistry Monday to Friday is a definite bonus. I really enjoy making chemistry easier to understand whether it is a year 7 or a year 13 learner. To add interest, I also try to link chemistry ideas with examples from everyday life.

What do you enjoy most about Teesside High School?

I am new to Teesside High School and so could probably add to this question at a later time; however, at the end of interview day I drove home thinking “I really hope I get that job”.. I was particularly taken by the location, the very friendly staff and the overall atmosphere which is calm and peaceful. Needless to say, I accepted the job offer in less than a second.

What is your favourite time of the year?

Spring leading into the Summer in terms of seasons. I enjoy walking along the Northumberland coast or exploring the Lake district with my family, much more enjoyable in Spring / Summer.

What do others say about you?

I think (or hope) they would use words like friendly, approachable, positive, calm and mention a very active sense of humour. Some say I am quieter outside of the classroom preferring to be out of the spotlight – listening rather than talking! In previous schools, staff have also mentioned I quickly vanish when recruiting to staff sports teams or quiz events.
