Community involvement and partnerships are central to our school’s mission. By collaborating with families, local businesses, training providers and community organisations, we strengthen educational experiences and extend learning beyond the classroom. These partnerships help prepare students to become engaged citizens in our wider society, responsible and caring, with strong values. They also allow them to broaden their experiences and learn first-hand about the world around them.
Equally, they allow us to open our doors to share what we believe is special about THS with a wider audience – elderly residents, children at local primary schools and neighbours, to name just a few.
We host a number of community events throughout the year. Our Family Fireworks Display is perhaps the most well-known, attracting hundreds of families each year. It is a great evening which gathers staff, pupils, families, friends of the school, neighbours and members of our local community for a fantastic and safe display in the school’s beautiful riverside grounds.
During the winter months, the school also hosts its Christmas Market, a PTA fundraising event that welcomes over 30 stallholders into the Main Hall. Visitors can enjoy festive food and drink, unique gifts, and seasonal treats – along with a special visit from Father Christmas himself.
Every two years, our community-focused celebrations move outdoors with the THS Summer Fayre. Another popular PTA fundraising event, the Summer Fayre is a relaxed and joyful day where children can enjoy inflatables and fun games, while parents unwind with live music, a picnic and refreshments from the bar.
We are the only independent school in Teesside to host an annual Careers Convention, a flagship event we have delivered for over 20 years. Each year, we welcome more than 40 universities, training providers and local businesses to provide students with current, high-quality careers advice and guidance. The Convention enables pupils to explore a wide range of career pathways and make valuable connections for the future.
Representatives come from a broad range of sectors, including accountancy and financial services such as Baines Jewitt, law firms including Punch Robson Solicitors, and public services such as Cleveland Police and the Armed Forces.
Alongside the Careers Convention, we engage with local businesses and school alumni to offer regular Tea-Time Talks to our school community, where professionals from diverse industries visit to share their career journeys and experiences. Speakers have represented a wide range of fields, from acting and charity work to many of the professions featured at the Careers Convention.
We also deliver an Able, Gifted and Talented (AG&T) programme, founded on the belief that every pupil should have the opportunity to exceed their perceived potential. We identify and support pupils with the capacity for higher levels of achievement. This is achieved through high academic expectations and an enriching curriculum that challenges, motivates and supports able pupils. Individual talents are recognised across a broad range of areas, including academic subjects, sport, music, drama and the arts.
Raising aspirations is central to our AG&T provision. Regular visits and partnerships within the local business community give pupils valuable exposure to real-world career opportunities. Over the past year, pupils have worked with published authors and illustrators, architects and magistrates and visited scientific laboratories and manufacturing plants.
Through these experiences and connections, we aim to inspire our pupils and help guide them confidently towards their future pathways.
Welcoming members of the local community onto our site is a key priority and we place particular value on our strong partnerships with local primary schools. We are proud to offer visiting schools the opportunity to use our facilities and take part in engaging activities designed to inspire and enrich pupils’ learning experiences and broaden their future horizons.
Over the past year, we have welcomed pupils from The Links Primary School, Hartburn Primary School, Junction Farm Primary School, Preston Primary School, Ingleby Mill Primary School and many more for a wide range of events and activities.
Visiting pupils have enjoyed Easter egg hunts and Halloween trails set within our beautiful grounds, explored our exceptional Forest School facilities, taken part in engaging lessons led by our Latin and Classics Department, and attended inspiring author talks in our Main Hall, delivered in conjunction with local independent bookshop, Drake.
Our creative arts teams are proud to share their spring term musical theatre production with local primary school children, with our Director of Music offering off-site workshops, learning lines and key songs, and the children attending and participating in the show itself, sharing the stage with their THS counterparts, who soon become their supporters and friends!
We greatly value the opportunity to work closely with our local primary schools to support, inspire and enrich pupils’ educational journeys.
If you are a colleague at a local school and wish to hear more about the opportunities we provide, please do get in touch.
We enjoy strong relationships with a range of local and national charities.
Throughout the year, pupils, staff and families work together to raise funds and awareness for causes that make a real difference.
We have a longstanding relationship with Butterwick Hospice, supporting their work through performances by our Senior School Choir and fundraising events such as the 2025 Spring Ball. Our Choir sing regularly for other local causes, such as dementia groups at Yarm Wellness and in cathedral performances at Christmastime.
We have also supported charities through sporting activities; Teesside Mind with a Prep School Colour Run, raising more than £3,000, and Teesside Hospice through a Rudolph Run, which raised almost £1,000.
In addition, our involvement in the Mission Christmas appeal and Hebron Foodbank resulted in the donation of over 1,600 Christmas gifts and food items to disadvantaged families across Teesside in recent months.
Giving back to the community is extremely important to us and we are committed to continuing our support for charities that positively impact the lives of others, particularly in our local area.
Teesside High School has a proud history of achievement and is keen to continue to attract outstanding pupils who will most benefit from the opportunities and experiences available here.
Teesside High School offers a number of scholarships to recognise able and gifted students in both the Senior School and Sixth Form. The Board of Governors is also committed to ensuring that bursary funds are available to assist families with limited means whose children are most likely to benefit from the education opportunities on offer but whose financial circumstances would otherwise not allow them to educate their child at Teesside High School. For more information about either of these opportunities, please contact our friendly admissions team via admissions@teessidehigh.co.uk
