Learning about Refugee Week at Teesside High School

Monday 03 July 2023 | By Megan Connor

This year, the theme of Refugee Week was ‘Compassion’ – displaying kindness towards one another and a desire to help those in need.

Refugee Week was a fantastic opportunity to highlight that compassion underpins everything we do at Teesside High School, whilst raising awareness of people who have had to flee their country in order to seek safety.

To commemorate the event, our Prep School participated in an assembly in which they explored the reasons people may become refugees. A great deal of empathy was expressed as the children imagined what it would be like to have to leave their homes.

To spread positivity and hope to newly arrived families in the local area, our pupils decorated folding paper sunflowers and included their own message of welcome inside. All sunflowers were delivered to Open Door North East, a charity supporting asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants in the Tees Valley.

Congratulations to our competition winner, Indy in Year 5!
