Key Stage One (5-7yrs)

Children progress from the Reception Class aged 5 to the Year 1 and Year 2 Classes for the remainder of their time in the Pre-Preparatory Department. Pupils are gently introduced to a more formal and structured approach to learning with a more subject-specific curriculum.

We offer the very best practice at this stage in the children’s education and build on the very high standards achieved in our excellent Foundation Stage. Children are motivated to reach their full potential in a challenging, exciting and stimulating learning environment.

We work closely with parents to give our children every opportunity to develop confidence, independence and responsibility. Children in the Pre-Prep play an active role in all aspects of school life within the secure family atmosphere of Teesside High School. Children learn better when they are excited and engaged and, through excellent teaching, children are able to grow in self-confidence and reach their full potential in a wide range of talents and skills. Children experience a broad range of exciting first-hand experiences through which they develop enthusiasm and understanding in all areas.

We are able to adapt the National Curriculum to design a programme of learning which caters for the needs of our children as individuals. We also draw from the national strategies to allow us to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our pupils. The teachers make full use of the Department’s well-equipped facilities and they deploy teaching resources effectively in order to ensure the highest standards of teaching and learning. Children in the Pre-Prep play an integral role in the life of the school, working as a team and demonstrating an awareness of the needs of others.

Throughout the year our children participate in our extensive, varied and exciting programme of curriculum enrichment activities. Children learn so much more through ‘real’ experiences and we place great emphasis on taking the children out into the world to experience activities first hand. These trips are carefully planned to support and extend the work carried out in the classroom, engaging the children and enhancing their work in all areas of the curriculum, bringing learning to life. Children benefit from access to our magnificent school grounds, perfect for woodland walks, nature rambles and observation of the weather and seasonal changes.

The School day starts at 8.40am and finishes at 3.30pm. Parents who require wrap around care are able to access a breakfast club that runs from 7.45am until school starts and a tea club that is available between 3.30pm and 6.00pm.

Throughout the School Holidays full time care is offered where qualified staff provide structured fun activities for the children from 8.30am to 5.30pm daily. A programme of the activities planned for each holiday is available towards the end of each term.
